so it’s Sunday again and here is this weeks picture. As I’m a big fan of reading and good books, I wanted to do such a picture for some time now. At first, I had some other plans for this weeks picture, but unfortunately my planned model had to postpone the shooting. But you will get to see the other idea in some weeks. So as my actual plan didn’t work out for this week, I had to come up with an alternative. Thankfully I started to gather all picture ideas I have some time ago. This is a great way to have some backup plans in your sleeve. The ideas I’m writing down, are usually very rough and just a hint of what could come out of this and most of these ideas never make it to actual pictures in the end. But some of them are like cooking in my subconsciousness for some time, until suddenly there is this one AHA moment where the idea suddenly takes form and is just shouting to be realised. So if you’re having trouble finding the right ideas for your pictures (or anything else for that matter), I can just tell you, make such a list. Every time you have an idea, write it down. Instantly. Take out your smartphone, and make a note. Even if it’s just a one word bulletpoint and you don’t know how or if this will play out in the end. Take a note and just look at all your ideas from time to time. In this way, you will keep them in your mind, so it can work on them for itself. So after some time you will notice, that some of these ideas will take shape, or will even lead to other ideas.
This weeks picture was such an idea. I just love to read a good book and I wanted to do a “reading / book” themed picture. So I just grabbed a bunch of my favourite books set them up and started shooting the background (Guess who my favorite writer is ;-) ). As I didn’t know at first, at what angle I will shoot the background, I had to try some slightly different set ups. So before I started shooting with Marie, I had to decide on one background image so I could choose the right perspective for shooting her.
Again, I used a three light setup for my model. One softbox on cam left about 45° and slightly above Marie. One striplight 135° behind her for the rim light, and one bare strobe set on very low power right in front of her, to just to lighten up the book a bit, as the black cover was just absorbing light like a black hole.
Until next week – Florian
