Hi there! Man picture really frustrated me. This did challenge me a lot more than I’d expected. I had this idea idea of an awesome shiny winter fairy, flying through this magical winter scenery. Sounds pretty easy doesn’t it? So I started with composing my background, to know how to light my model later. Besides the fact that it took me 2 hours till I found all the right components for my background, this went pretty smooth. If at all, the background turned out better than I imagined. But from there on, the nightmare started. When shooting my model, the light just didn’t do what I wanted it to do. The body of the fairy is actually made of two picture. As Maries is not so good at flying yet, I needed her to shoot standing on the floor. So in order to let her fly later, I shot the body and the legs separate. When I finally had a good picture of the decent lit body, I had to rearrange all the lights for her feet, to match the light of the body. Believe me. This is not as easy as it sounds. It took me nearly an hour fiddling around to get the light as best as I could. This work made me appreciate the picture of all these professional composers even more. After we finished the shooting and I headed over to photoshop, I noticed that I took half of the leg pictures with the lighting from the wrong side. We turned around during the shooting, but I just forgot to adjust the lights again. Damn.. this kind of stuff shouldn’t happen. But thank god, I still had a decent selection of legs. So I put it all together and started adding the long floating hair and the wings. The wings didn’t turn out exactly as I wanted them to be but in the end I think they’re quite ok. The hair is a different story. I just couldn’t figure out how to make it look good. All warping and adjusting just made it look even worse. I hate editing long hair! So in the end, when I just couldn’t figure out a good way to get this right, I started painting in hair by hand. It took me nearly 2 hours and I’m still not happy with the results. I think I could spent 2 more hours on the hair, but as I’m on kind of a schedule, I will stop here. So this picture definitely tested my skills and brought me to my current limit. Still so much to learn.. I hope you like it nonetheless.
For lighting I used 3 strobes. The main light at 10:00 through an umbrella for a nice soft light. One fill at 07:00 and one hair light at 02:00 both through softboxes.
Till next week – Florian
