Hi there! As the days are getting shorter and shorter and also colder again, you can almost feel the first grasps of winter already. So it’s time again to sit inside in front of the window, staring out in the dark and wondering what might be creeping there, right outside the shine of the next streetlamp. Even though I’m more of a summer / sun kind of person, I enjoy the time around Halloween pretty much. It’s the time of the year where you can let the morbid part of your imagination loose without anyone wondering about your sanity ;-). So I decided to do something creepy and a little bit disturbing for this week. The idea was, to create this slightly crazy gentleman guy, who is keeping himself a bloody undead / mummy pet. Fortunately I had most of the props already at home from last years Halloween shooting. So I just had to get the a cheap carnival cylinder and the bandages. It was kind of a mess to decorate Marie. First, I wrapped her in all this bandage stuff (almost a whole box of it which are like 40 – 50m), before soaking her with movie blood. During the shooting, she had to hold still in this very comfortable pose you can see in the picture. And because she couldn’t see a thing with the bloody bandages over her eyes, it also was not so easy to tell her how to pose. But it the end, it all worked very well and my two models did a great job. Thanks a lot Marie and Markus for volunteering for this picture. After the shooting, my basement studio looked like a slaughterhouse. Blood was everywhere. Thank god, nobody came around till I cleaned up the whole mess again. It might have been a bit awkward to explain ;-).
The post production of this was somewhat difficult. On Sunday I woke with a hell of a headache. But I hauled myself in front of the PC nonetheless. Even after several cups of coffee, it felt like my brain was still in standby and it was pretty hard to concentrate even on the simplest task of cutting my subjects from the background. But nonetheless, I kept pushing forward. And in the end, even though it took a lot longer than usual, it turned out quite nice I think.
I used a 4 light setup this time. 2 bare strobes from each 02:00 and 22:00 as hard rimlight. One striplight at 08:00 as mainlight for Markus and one gridded Softbox right besides the striplight as mainlight for Marie.
For next week, I will make something a little less disturbing.
So long – Florian
