This week, I wanted to play around little in PS again. And what would be a better PS practice than to plunge into the tales of one Thousand and one Nights? My idea was, to create a Djinn and then just go crazy with lighting and smoke effects. The first thing that comes to mind when you think of Djinns nowaday, is of course the nice funny blue guy from Disneys Aladdin. This Genie is a great guy for kids and I think Disney did a nice Job with creating this character. He’s hell of a funny guy. But for my picture I wanted to take a more traditional approach. In Islamic Mythology, Djinns are creatures made of fire and air. They are already mentioned in the Quran. And these ancient Djinns are the role models for my Djinn here. I wish I had some more time for this picture to organize some decent props. Which brings me to my next point. Usually I don’t have so much time to take my pictures during workdays. So most weeks, I end up with taking the picture either on saturday, or on sunday and editing it in a hurry on sunday. So in the last few weeks, it happened quite a lot, that I looked at my picture on monday and noticed some small things with which I’m not quite happy. Some people have no problems with changing pictures, after they’ve already published them, but I don’t like this so much. So in the future, depending on when I’m finished editing a picture, I will either upload it on sunday, or on monday to give me a little more time to revise the picture again before uploading!
For this pic I used a 2 strobe setup. One softbox at 05:00 as main light and one softbox at 09:00 right besides me as fill. I also used one reflector at 03:00 to bounce the fill light back a little.
When you following my blog regular, you probably know, that I’ll be on vacation for the next, hold on tight, three and a half weeks. On thursday next week, Marie and I will fly over to New York City and then travel around a bit in the north eastern corner of the US. As I won’t be bringing a notebook with photoshop, the pictures and also the posts I’ll write in August will be a bit different. I’ll try to keep you up to date with a small “travel diary” and of course, I will include some pictures from our adventures ;-). I hope you’ll enjoy this as much as I will!
Also, for some time now, I’ve been thinking a lot about creating a picture series. I now decided what I want to do for this and am working on an concept. I want this to be a lot bigger than my usual weekly pic and I hope that it will bring my photographing skills and my editing skills to a whole new level. I think, from time to time you have to challenge yourself in order to improve. If you just do the same stuff over and over again, you won’t learn anything new. And I’m already pretty excited about this, even though I’m just at a very early stage right now. I will keep you updated about this as I’m going along. My current plan is, to finish this till the end of the year and that there will be 5 pictures in this series.
So enough for today. The next time I write you, it’ll be from the other side of the Atlantic Ocean.
Until then – Florian
