There is nothing worse on the world than masking hair in photoshop. It just never turns out as clean as I wanted it to be. I guess that I still have to find a good method which works for my, let’s say not entirely seamless background, in my basement studio. I just spent almost 3 hours today, just by trying to mask the hair in this picture. I’m still not quite satisfied.
I thought pretty long about this weeks pic. I only knew, that I wanted to use my gels again. And this time, not just to adjust the light temperature, but to make some crazy colors. So I finally just grabbed two colors I didn’t use before and decided to make this dynamic dance like picture. Marie was thrilled of course as I asked her to do the modeling again ;-). Thank god I have my own private supermodel almost always at hand. So we started looking for a nice outfit for her. Originally I wanted to go with an white outfit for this picture. But Marie convinced me that a black dress would look much better instead. And I’m very glad she did! The shooting was quite funny. Marie was banging her head furiously up and down, trying not to laugh, because I wanted her to look serious. We were shooting for like 30 min, when the battery of my cam died. It was already pretty low when we started shooting, but as I always have my spare battery at hand, I didn’t worry so much about it. So I grabbed the spare, put it in the cam turned it on again and nothing happened. Right then, I could see in my mind, how I changed batteries last week and put one in the bag to charge it later. The one I forgot charging and just put in my camera.. empty. Sometimes I hate my stupidity. Maybe I should get a third battery, just in case ;-). So the shooting came to an abrupt end. In the end, there were some great pictures and it was already pretty hard to decided which to use. (In the meanwhile, I charged both batteries again ;-)).
The light setup for this was a little special for my standards. I put the turquoise gelled strobe directly behind Marie, to get this nice highlight and to light her hair from behind. The second strobe, gelled purple, was standing at roughly 04:00. To lighten up her face a little, and to avoid too much color in her face, I put my softbox directly above her at 08:00 with grid on, to avoid the light spill too much on the background. Behind Marie I put my homemade black styrofoam absorber.
So long – Florian
