right now it’s this special time of the year again. In May and June, it seems like all of my customers (in my daily business life, not photography) need something from me. And if my customers need anything, they need it right now. So I’ve been travelling a lot for the past 2 weeks. And I will be travelling again next week. But thank god, next week is just a 3 work day week for me. I hope it will get a little more quiet after that. Right now, it is pretty tough to squeeze in a timeslot for my weekly pic. Also, it feels like all this business trips, are sucking every last bit of creativity out of me. It’s hard to come up with good ideas when my mind is always occupied with laser scanning, distance measurement and spectroscopy. Even when I sleep, I sometimes dream about lasers and stuff which, believe me or not, is not always as amusing as it sounds ;-).
I had a nice conceptual composition in mind for this week again. I didn’t do one of these in the last few weeks. But, unfortunately I just didn’t have the time for that (again..). So instead I thought, I’ll show you the equipment I use for my pictures. Of course, it had to be in form of a portrait, else it would be boring. So what you can see here, are my two softboxes (Walimex Orange line 60cm x 60cm, Walimex Striplight 25cm x 90cm), which I came to love thoroughly in the past 6 month. Best 200 bucks I ever spent! These guys are so much better for controlling the light than umbrellas. Especially if you put a grid on additionally. I’ve got 3 Yongnuo YN560 Speedlites. As I use my strobes in manual mode only and they are much much cheaper than the original canon speedlites, these are the obvious choice for me. I got 4 tripods, one small Mantona Scout for my camera, which does his job, but I will replace it nonetheless with something more steady, soon. 2 x Walimex Pro WT 806 and one small Delamax WT 803. In comparison, I would always choose the Walimex again, because these are much more steady than the small and shaky Of course, for indoor pics, where you don’t have so much space, the Delamax is also pretty convenient. As the softboxes are usually meant for studio strobes, I got a MobiFlash adapter for each softbox, so I can use my speedlites with them. I’m no fan of the firefly softboxes, which built exclusively for speedlites. I took a look at them at the photo equipment shop of my choice, but they are pretty small and felt pretty cheap in comparison to my current ones (and these are also not so big). To trigger the strobes, I use 4 cactus V5s which work really well. I didn’t have any problems with not triggering since I started to use them (which was roughly 3 years ago). There is just one minor complaint I have about them though. The first is the rather poor battery tray. On 3 out of 4 of my triggers, these trays just don’t stay in the trigger, but rather jump out all the time. I fixed it with a small strip of gaffa tape which works perfectly well, but nonetheless, this should not be. Up to now I have 3 lenses. 1) The kit Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS 2) My “always on” Tamron AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di LD Aspherical [IF] VC macro 3) My favourite Canon 50mm f/1.4 USM. I don’t want to say anything about the quality of these lenses here, as there are many other pages out there where you can find detailed reviews. For most of my Week 52 pictures I used my 18-55mm kit, as I don’t have enough space indoors for my 50mm prime which I always use if I have the space to back up far enough. Even though the quality of this kit lens is surprisingly good for the price, I will get a Canon 17-40mm f/4 as replacement, soon. If possible I would use my 50mm prime all the time, but then I would need a bigger apartment ;-). Additionally I have some rogue gels, two umbrellas, some camera cleaning stuff, one (5m) cable trigger, one Canon EOS 500D (my first Camera (not just DSLR) EVER and the camera with which I found out how much I love photography) And of course my new and beloved 70D which is or course not in the picture, because I took it with it (Doh). Wow.. this got to be a pretty long list now. I didn’t notice I have that much stuff already until I wrote it down now ;-). If you have any questions or comments about this stuff, feel free to mail me, or just post it in the comments.
As you can see the lighting setup in the picture, I will skip the description and diagram for this week.
