as you probably already noticed, I’m playing around with different looks currently. Usually I prefer this nice dramatic HDR look, because it just make the picture more alive and more fun. But of course this just works for a certain kind of pictures. For this week I wanted to try something I didn’t do before. My vision was a kind of low key, black and whiteish picture. Usually I don’t like b&w, so much, because of two reasons: First, you take one entire dimension out of your pictures. and second there are too much b&w picture out there. Also, most people who do b&w, just turn the saturation down, which almost always looks cheap. But of course as always, there are exceptions.
So I told Marie to put on some makeup, and went to get my selfmade styrofoam absorber from the basement and set up my two softboxes. Then I checked with Marie and found that doing makeup always takes longer than expected. So I started to clean my lenses, changed the batteries in my strobes and wireless triggers and made something to eat. When she was finished with the makeup, the shooting was done pretty quick. Just tried some different poses, and slightly adjusted the lighting one more time and we were done.
For lighting I used my two softboxes. The first one on cam left roughly 90°. The second one 45° behind Marie on the right side to get a nice rim light. Both softboxes had grids on, to avoid light scattering and get a nice crisp light. As background I used a self made absorber. The slight texture you can see in the background of the final picture, comes from this and is not added in post production.
Until next week – Florian
