Sometime during December, as my vacation was coming closer and closer, I realized that I didn’t take a picture for 3 weeks. So I came up with this crazy idea to finally try myself on a project52, too. In fact, this is really a kick in the butt for me, because lazy as I am, I need a deadline for everything to get going. I figured, that the new year is the perfect time for starting this. Now the first (half) week of 2014 is over, and here I am. For my project52, I just set two rules.
1) One picture per week (posted on Sunday or Monday)
2) Every picture will be edited
I know, many people just do the opposite, and don’t edit their pictures at all. But photoshop is a big part of my pictures, and I want to practice my photoshop skills as well as my photography skills with this. I already have some crazy ideas which will be pretty challenging. I hope I can pull off some of them.
At the beginning of my 2 week vacation, I had such big plans on how to start my project 52. But I’m sure you know how this is, you just blink once, and half the vacation is already gone. Christmas, NYE, and my birthday were over already and in the days between, I struggled to put this blog up and running. Last minute I changed the design again and I’m still not quite happy.
Last week I headed out to Vienna with Marie and her family. I can tell you, this city is awesome.
We left 5 days ago (right after we recovered from NYE). Vienna is famous for its historic city center. So we did all the stuff you have to do when you are in Vienna for the first time. We went the to the palace of Elisabeth of Austria (called Sissi in Germany) which is particularly favoured by women ;-) , drank some excellent coffee and ate the famous Sacher cake. We even went to the theater. The most impressive thing was the ancient Central Cemetery. This thing is creepy as hell. Whole parts of it are totally overgrown with ivy and trees and most of the gravestones are ancient, broken and half sunken in the earth. The day was pretty foggy, which added to the nice creepy atmosphere. There are even some deers living there. They almost startled me to death. I was just taking some pictures, as a whole bunch of them jumped out of the brush just a few meters (for you American readers out there, that’s like 15 feet ;-) ) ahead of us.
I was thinking of my “Week 1” pic a lot, but the time just ran away and my once so great plans, where scaled down day by day… Maybe I will come back to one or two of my initial ideas later. 2 days ago I finally decided that the pic should be something that reflects the great romantic atmosphere in Vienna and of course I wanted it to be a portrait. The pictures for this project will be mostly portraits. Maybe I’ll throw in one or two landscape pics later. We will see..
So one night Lucie and Norbert volunteered for this picture. We headed to this small park in front of the town center I spotted the day before. We got to Vienna by plane, so the space in my bag was very limited. I just had one bare strobe with radio trigger, my beloved rogue gels and my tripod with me. I wanted to catch the nice warm ambient light as much as possible, so I put the strobe with a nice warm gel on minimum power and pumped up the Iso of my new 70d to 3200 (OK I admit it… I also was very curious how well it can handle this… ). The picture turned out a bit more grainy than I expected. (So the first thing I learned in this project, is to avoid cranking up the Iso that high again).
Before I finish, I just want to say that I’m still working on this blog. The thing that’ll come next, are galeries with some of my older work. Also I want to link this all to my other social media accounts. But as I’m still a bloody noob in all this blogging thingy I have to figure out how to do this properly first.
So make sure to stop by next week to check out next weeks pic and see what’s new!
Until then, Florian
